Mitchell Family Herbert H. Mitchell was born 29 May 1916 in Lawrence, Kansas to John R. and Ophelia (Hopkins) Mitchell. After graduating from Lawrence Memorial High School in 1935, Mitchell attended The University of Kansas, where he majored in art and belonged to Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
